Is your first love worth a second chance…?
Colleen O’Rourke is in love with love…just not when it comes to herself. Most nights, she can be found behind the bar at the Manningsport, New York, tavern she owns with her twin brother, doling out romantic advice to the lovelorn, mixing martinis and staying more or less happily single. See, ten years ago, Lucas Campbell broke her heart…an experience Colleen doesn’t want to have again, thanks. Since then, she’s been happy with a fling here and there, some elite-level flirting and playing matchmaker to her friends.
But a family emergency has brought Lucas back to town, handsome as ever and still the only man who’s ever been able to crack her defenses. Seems like maybe they’ve got some unfinished business waiting for them—but to find out, Colleen has to let her guard down, or risk losing a second chance with the only man she’s ever loved.

My Thoughts:

Waiting on You by Kristan Higgins is a beautifully written story about second-chance love. Lucas Campbell was Colleen O’Rourke’s first love and the reason for her first broken heart. Their epic teenage love turned angsty after secrets were revealed that tore Colleen’s family apart. This is my first experience reading any of Kristan Higgins work, and I have to say that although I did enjoy it there was something missing.

Higgins characters are easy to relate to, and the dialogue was witty and funny. I loved ladies that would gather at Colleen’s mother’s house to watch Lucas and his cousin work shirtless. They totally had me laughing out loud with how outrageous they behaved.

I found the chemistry a bit flat between Colleen and Lucas. I found myself more interested in the side story surrounding Lucas’ family than the romance between the main couple. I found the flow and the pace of the plot choppy, as well. It could be mainly due to my preference, I’m not a fan of telling a back story through flashbacks so that could be why I had a hard time with the way the plot unfolded.

Overall, Waiting on You was an enjoyable read. I just wish it had a bit more to it. It was missing that spark that connects the reader to the main characters enough to care if they end up together or not. I’m not sure I’d classify it as Romance, to me it seemed more like Women’s Fiction. I’m definitely going to give another book from this author a try though, maybe it was just this particular couple I couldn’t connect with. I feel like I’m missing something since I keep seeing such great reviews for her books. Have you read anything by Kristan Higgins? Do you have a suggestion on what book of hers I should try? Please let me know in the comments.

Notable quotes/parts:
“Just once, I’d love to be heartbroken because someone loved me and left me, instead of heartbroken because I never got on that train at all.”
“I’ve found that if you expect the best of a person,” Frank told him once, “you generally get it.” “What happens when you don’t?” Lucas asked. “Live and learn. Emphasis on learn.”
