{Book Review} The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury

My Thoughts:

The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury is an epic retelling of Aladdin’s story. I absolutely loved it, even though I’ve only read a sampler of the story so far. The writing is gorgeous and the pacing of the plot is executed perfectly. I could not put this down. It has everything I could want in a retelling of one of my favorite stories. There’s suspense, action, danger, mystery, and forbidden love.

The world building in this story is so complex and well developed. Khoury does a wonderful job of inserting the details of the setting while moving the story along with an action driven plot. I love that this thrilling adventure is jammed packed with plot twists. There is so much suspense and mystery, just when you think the characters are going to have a moment of peace something will happen and the action starts all over again.

Let’s talk characters. I love that this is told from the point of view of the Jinni, Zahra. I can’t tell if she’s good or not. Her past is mysterious, and her motives are a bit suspicious. She’s a completely fascinating character though, and I can’t wait to finish the story and find out what happens to her. Aladdin is a bit of a ladies man, and from what I can tell, he gets himself into a lot of trouble because of it. He has a questionable reputation, and yet in his own way he has a strong sense of honor.

The Forbidden Wish had me utterly captivated. I read through the sampler provided to me in less than two hours. I think it was the first eight chapters of the book. This book nerd is dying to read the rest of it. I need to know what happens. Khoury’s writing is truly spectacular. Zahra and Aladdin are fascinating characters. This is definitely my most anticipated new release for 2016.
