Title: An Impossible Imposter
Author: Deanna Raybourn
How did I get it? I received a review copy from the publisher via Edelweiss.
What’s it about? “London, 1889. Veronica Speedwell and her natural historian beau Stoker are summoned by Sir Hugo Montgomerie, head of Special Branch. He has a personal request on behalf of his goddaughter, Euphemia Hathaway. After years of traveling the world, her eldest brother, Jonathan, heir to Hathaway Hall, was believed to have been killed in the catastrophic eruption of Krakatoa a few years before.
But now a man matching Jonathan’s description and carrying his possessions has arrived at Hathaway Hall with no memory of his identity or where he has been. Could this man truly be Jonathan, back from the dead? Or is he a devious impostor, determined to gain ownership over the family’s most valuable possessions–a legendary parure of priceless Rajasthani jewels? It’s a delicate situation, and Veronica is Sir Hugo’s only hope.
Veronica and Stoker agree to go to Hathaway Hall to covertly investigate the mysterious amnesiac. Veronica is soon shocked to find herself face-to-face with a ghost from her past. To help Sir Hugo discover the truth, she must open doors to her own history that she long believed to be shut for good.” – Goodreads.com
Thoughts: Deanna Raybourn does it again. In my opinion, this series just keeps getting better with every installment. In this, we find out more about Veronica’s past while she and Stoker get pulled into yet another mystery to solve. This case hits Veronica on a very personal level, involving someone she thought had passed away during the eruption of Krakatoa. Has her friend Jonathan come back from the dead or are they dealing with an imposter?
Compared to the other books in the series, this one does have a bit of a slow start. However, once the pace picked up it pretty much snowballed from there. I could not put it down. There are many twists and turns in the plot that end up resolving some unsolved mysteries from the past as well as the new mystery Stoker and Veronica find themselves pulled into. Poor Stoker, as usual, finds himself in physically dangerous situations but in this case, it was not entirely due to Veronica’s thirst for adventure.
The deepening bond between Stoker and Veronica is challenged by her past. The tension between the two left me wondering will my favorite OTP survive this? I sure hope so since it has taken so long to get them to this point. I can only hope with time Stoker and Veronica can move forward and be stronger for it.
Overall, I really loved this. There was a mystery, suspense, action, bittersweet and emotional moments, and humor to balance things out. I love Stoker and Veronica so much! I can’t wait for the next book to come out so I can find out what will happen next. I recommend this series all the time. It is such a wonderful series to get lost in.
